I was debating on whether to post this before I left or when I came back. I figured now is as good as time as any. Since we have some time before our little one comes I decided to gather as much information as possible for our child on on-going issues in China. What made it interesting is my lack of insight on just how many people do not agree with the one child policy. CNN had an interesting article on China's Family Planning program. It really made me think about how lucky I am to have choices.
What if you didn't have a choice?
What would you do?
Would you go hungry?
Starve your family?
or go along with it?
or just not think about it and hope it went away?
Its really important for me to put myself in my future child's birthparents shoes. I know the choice was a difficult one for them. And after reading this article I have even more empathy for them.
But yet the question still remains.....
If it were you...
Well, what would you do?

I'm not sure what to make of the article. A crowd of 50 can feel like 100. You know that from your background, I'm sure. Eyewitness testimony while good isn't always accurate - - so the 10,000 number seems a bit high to me. I don't know that I could identify 5,000 or 10,000, or even 1000 people. It would just seem like A LOT of people...
If you can't pay the fees for your children and the choice is to starve or to go to prison (not sure that is the actual choice here), I would probably be forced into some kind of desparate act. Obviously going to jail is just going to starve my family. But sitting idle waiting for an arrest doesn't seem like my personality type.
Would I riot? Quite possibly. Would I engage in covert action? Again. Probably.
Would I look at farming my children out to relatives and close friends who could help "hide" my infringement on the 1 child law?
Yes. I would. I would do anything so that my children didn't end up in an orphanage to be adopted thousands of miles away.
Rather it be a dear aunt or cousin or good friend.
Someone nearby.
If I was very young and unmarried, the story might be different. But if I was a farmer in an autonomous area who had been raising my kids since birth with no hassle and you came and started trouble...
Lord help you. All I can say...
