My First Quilt Block

I'm speechless!!! Well, almost. I memorized a pattern I read about in Barnes and Nobles the other day and decided to finally try and hand-piece my first quilt. This is how I did it step by step
1. Using already cut 7x7 squares, I cut the square into four 3 1/2 inch squares. This allows for a 1/4 inch seam on both sides.
2. Then I sewed them in pairs.
3. Then I sewed two pairs together.
4. Then I cut one solid colored strip of fabric 3 1/2 inchs in length (the fabric was 42 iches wide) across.
5. Using that strip I then cut two smaller 6 inch strips, and two 12 inch strips.
****Here is where I should have cut them differently. I realized later that I should have cut four strips of fabric measured at 9 inches wide. Proportionally, it would probably look better.***
6. I then sewed the strips to the square I made with those 3 1/2 inch squares.

CONFUSED YET???

I AM!!!

I think I figured it out but it is going to take forever to sew by hand. A real labor of love. Also, I can not stress the importance of the 1/4 inch seam. I lost the seam on one side of the square and I haven't a clue how I am going to balance it out in the quilt. Thank goodness, this is the first one!! By the time I get to the "100 Good Wishes Quilt" I believe I will be using a sewing machine (He!He!)

You think? God, yes! Hand sewing is nice when you are at the dentist waiting for your turn but who has the time in real life?
