Waiting Families-Mom's Night Out

This past friday, I attended my first FCC Waiting Families-Mom's Night Out. It was hosted by Lauren & Jayne at Lauren's home. The meetings are for future Mom's-to-be and already Mom's. Everyone brings a dish, potluck, and gathers around discussing this and that. This one was special because one of the ladies, Tina, received her referral. To celebrate her referral, a surprise baby shower was put together. It was amazing to see how many ladies are waiting for their children, going back for another little one from China, and how many Mom's keep coming after they receive their child(ren).

The highlight of the night was watching Tina opening her gifts.

Wow!!!

I can't wait for it to be my turn:)

In addition to general conversation, get to know you chit-chat. The chairpersons, Lauren & Jayne, held a discussion on what types of things we should be discussing before we leave for China as well as the importance of understanding how our roles as spouses/single parents will change and yet remain the same. Some key points brought up:

1. Your child is joining you. You are not joining your child. Prepare, prepare, prepare!
2. Establish a network of support thru family & friends.
3. Do as much as you can with your spouse now!! Take those trips, romantic get aways. Enjoy the little things. (Going to the bathroom with the door closed, long baths, nights out with friends, reading a book for pleasure, staying up late by choice)
4. Discuss attachment-bonding issues, discipline, differing roles as parents.
5. Once your child comes home, make time for yourselves as a couple, plan dates.
Relationships require work. Don't forget about your spouse! It takes time to transition from a couple to a family. Also, remember to save some time for yourself as an individual. Take breaks from your child. You have a life with your child and away from him/her. It does not mean you love him or her less.
6. While in China try to visit the orphanage, meet the foster-parents, learn as much as you can. It will be all you have to share with your child.
7. Take lots and lots of pictures!!!

Oh definitely spend time with your spouse now! We wish we would have traveled more before we had our children. It's a lot harder to lug all the baby gear around now. :-)
